A brief history of STAR Ratings
Great Britain’s Automobile Association, the AA, claims to have been the first to use stars for accommodation ratings way back in 1912 when they issued the coveted AA Star Classification to hotels assessed as ‘superior’.
Soon after, in 1915, Australia’s Auto Clubs were born. But it wasn’t until the 1950’s that driving holidays really took off as cars became generally affordable and Australia’s first hotels were rated in both NSW and Queensland.
In 1963, the amalgamation of the NRMA, RACQ, RACV, and RAA’s rating systems brought about a standardised scheme for hotels and motels across the Eastern states. The Northern and Western states soon followed.
Over the next 25 years, STAR Rating Scheme Standards for all other accommodation Categories were introduced with ‘Resort’ being the last to be added in 2005. The ten Categories assessed by the Australian STAR Rating Scheme are:
