Backpackers

Backpackers are inexpensive places to sleep and are often used by young overseas travellers. They are also popular with groups travelling on trips away or interstate. The sleeping arrangements are usually communal with a dormitory-style arrangement consisting of beds or bunks, although private rooms are quite common. Backpackers’ hostels will normally offer limited self-catering cooking facilities and social areas where everyone is welcome to get together. Showers, toilets, lounge and dining facilities will all be shared.

The table below provides a guide to the absolute minimum a Backpackers' hostel must offer to achieve the required STAR Rating. Many Backpackers exceed this basic description and offer other facilities and services that are not listed here. Each STAR Rating level must include all listed requirements of lower levels.

	Very well appointed hostel accommodation reflecting quality fittings throughout and a high level of facilities and guest services such as internet, BBQ and other entertainment facilities
	Well appointed and comfortable hostel accommodation providing a good range of facilities and guest services important to the budget traveller
	Basic hostel accommodation with clean and reasonably well maintained range of facilities and a few guest services
	Simple and clean, no-frills style hostel accommodation with limited facilities

A half STAR is awarded to properties that provide a more extensive range of facilities
