Bed & Breakfast

Bed & Breakfasts are divided into two types, Traditional and Self Catering. Traditional B&Bs are defined by two important things: Breakfast must be prepared and presented by the resident host and must be included in the tariff. Also a bathroom, separate from that used by the host, must be provided to guests. Often you can organise an additional meal if you ask. Self Catering B&Bs usually provide the same comforts of Traditional B&Bs, but offer the alternative of cooking for yourself with breakfast ingredients provided each day by the host who lives nearby. This accommodation option is often separate from the main house, whereas Traditional B&Bs are generally, but not exclusively situated within the house.

The tables below provide a guide to the absolute minimum a Bed & Breakfast must offer to achieve the required STAR Rating. Many Bed & Breakfasts exceed this basic description and offer other facilities and services that are not listed here. Each STAR Rating level must include all listed requirements of lower levels.

Bed & Breakfast (Traditional)

	Outstanding establishments characterised by luxury appointments offering an exceptional standard of facilities, furnishings and guest services. Cooked and continental breakfast provided by host, air-conditioning individually controlled in bedroom, comprehensive toiletries and ensuite to all bedrooms
	Very well appointed accommodation reflecting stylish décor throughout and a high standard of facilities and services. Ensuite/individual bathroom for each bedroom and a range of entertainment facilities. Breakfast prepared by host
	Well appointed and comfortable accommodation providing an emphasis on style with a good range of facilities and services. Breakfast prepared by host
	Basic accommodation with clean and reasonably well maintained range of facilities. Breakfast prepared by host
	Simple and clean, no-frills style accommodation with limited room facilities and often a shared bathroom. Breakfast prepared by host

A half STAR is awarded to properties that provide a more extensive range of facilities

Bed & Breakfast (Self Catering)

	Outstanding establishments characterised by luxury appointments offering an exceptional standard of facilities, furnishings and guest services. Cooked and continental breakfast ingredients provided, cooking facilities, dishwasher, laundry and comprehensive range of toiletries
	Very well appointed accommodation reflecting stylish décor throughout and a high standard of facilities. Cooked and continental breakfast ingredients provided, cooking facilities and a range of entertainment facilities
	Well appointed and comfortable accommodation providing an emphasis on style with a good range of facilities. Minimum of continental breakfast provisions and cooking facilities
	Basic accommodation with clean and reasonably well maintained range of facilities including cooking facilities and breakfast provisions
	Very simple and clean, no-frills style accommodation with cooking facilities and breakfast provisions
